Endometrial Biopsy

1. What is it?

A procedure to obtain a sample of the endometrial lining. It involves the insertion of a plastic pipelle (a small flexible plastic straw), thru the endocervical opening, into the uterus.

2.When is it done?

- evaluation of abnormal uterine bleeding
- Investigation of infertility
- To confirm a chronic uterine infection

3. What are its Complications?

- Perforation of the uterus in 1-2 out of each 1000 cases
- Infection: rare
- Postoperative bleeding: rare
- Vasovagal Reflex ( i.e. lightheartedness ) from instrumentation of uterus: on occasion
- Pain / cramping is usually moderate and responds to most over-the-counter pain medications
- It usually does not interfere with your ability to drive your vehicle.

4. Instructions

- If you are still having periods , you should schedule it more than 14-16 days after ovulation
- If you are bleeding on the day of the procedure, you will need to reschedule
- Take an over-the-counter pain medication ( Tylenol , Ibuprofen , Advil , etc ) prior to the visit in the office. If you take aspirin , please do not take it the day of your visit.
- If you have a heart condition that requires you to take antibiotics before dental work, please notify your doctor prior to the date of your procedure.
